Vertiv PowerMod – Power supply

The PowerMod separates the power supply from the IT, both physically and technically. It houses the uninterruptible power supply, distribution and backup systems in a modular arrangement – designed for maximum availability of the infrastructure that depends on it.

The typical trigger is an imbalance: there is still enough IT floor space, but the existing UPS has reached the end of its capacity or of its service life. Replacing it during live operation is often difficult in an existing building, because space, structural loading or fire compartmentation get in the way. The PowerMod solves this by moving the power supply outdoors.

It is used just as often in combination with a MegaMod or MaxiMod, where computing capacity and power supply are planned as separate build stages – for instance because the connected load only becomes available later.

Where the PowerMod is the right choice

  • When the UPS has run its course The existing installation has reached its capacity limit or the end of its service life, with no space in the building for a replacement.
  • When the existing building cannot be rebuilt Structural loading, fire compartments or a lack of space often prevent replacement during live operation. Moving the equipment outdoors avoids all of that.
  • As a build stage in its own right Combined with a MegaMod or MaxiMod, computing capacity and power supply can be planned on separate timelines.
  • When availability is everything The modular design allows redundancy levels that can no longer be achieved technically in an installation that has grown over time.

Standard equipment

These components are part of every system – all you provide is the footprint, a power connection and network access.

  • Redundant precision cooling with environmentally friendly refrigerants
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS), with a backup generator on request
  • Early fire detection and suppression system
  • Access control and remote monitoring via Smart Control
  • Network connection via fiber, 5G or LTE
  • Optional: server racks, cabling, PDUs and complete IT hardware

Typical deployment scenarios

  • Replacing a UPS installation at the end of its service life, without building work indoors
  • Raising the redundancy level in an existing data center
  • Power supply as a separate build stage of a MegaMod project
  • Bridging the wait until an increased connected load becomes available
  • Protecting critical production and control systems outside IT

Why the power supply belongs outdoors

In data centers that have grown over time, the UPS usually sits wherever there was space when the site was first planned – frequently right next to the IT floor. That was unproblematic for a long time, but it becomes an obstacle as soon as capacity is to be expanded or equipment replaced: every intervention takes place during live operation and in the immediate vicinity of the production systems.

Moving it into a separate module outdoors decouples the two. Maintenance, expansion and replacement of the power supply no longer touch the IT floor. It also frees up floor space in the building that can be used for IT capacity instead of being occupied by batteries and switchgear.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PowerMod a data center?

No. The PowerMod contains the power supply only: UPS, distribution and backup systems. It is used either on its own for an existing data center or alongside a MegaMod or MaxiMod that houses the IT.

Can the PowerMod supply an existing data center?

Yes, that is one of the most common applications. Where the existing UPS has reached its capacity limit or the end of its service life and there is no space in the building for a replacement, the power supply is moved into a separate module outdoors.

Which redundancy levels are possible?

The modular design allows configurations up to N+1 and beyond. Which level makes sense depends on what an outage costs your operation – we establish that before the configuration.

Does the PowerMod replace a backup generator?

No, the two serve different purposes. The UPS bridges short interruptions without any break in supply, while a backup generator covers longer outages. The two can be combined and are designed together.

Where is the PowerMod installed?

Outdoors, on a load-bearing footprint with access for truck and crane. This frees up space in the building that was previously taken up by batteries and switchgear.
