Vertiv SmartMod – Modular data center

The SmartMod is a fully prefabricated data center in modular construction. Cooling, uninterruptible power supply, fire protection and access control are integrated and matched to one another ex works – the system leaves production ready to run and only has to be positioned, connected and commissioned on site.

This is exactly where the decisive difference to a conventional server room fit-out lies: the entire project phase of specialist planning, tendering, trade coordination and sign-offs falls away. What takes six to eighteen months there is a matter of days to a few weeks with the SmartMod.

Because the model is available in several build stages, it covers an unusually wide range. At the lower end, a few kilowatts are enough for an edge installation with one or two racks; the more powerful SmartMod Max variant scales the IT infrastructure to around 210 kW, and in the full build stage the range extends to 1 MW.

Where the SmartMod is the right choice

  • When speed is the priority As a standard system, the SmartMod is available now. In the event of an outage or a sudden need for capacity, it is therefore regularly the only solution that meets the timeframe at all.
  • When the requirement is uncertain As a rental solution, the system commits you to nothing. If demand grows, another module is added; if it falls, you hand a unit back.
  • When there is no space in the building The unit is installed outdoors. You give up no usable floor space and make no changes to the building services.
  • When the site is remote With 5G or LTE connectivity and an optional backup generator, the system also runs where neither fiber nor an adequate power connection is available.

Standard equipment

These components are part of every system – all you provide is the footprint, a power connection and network access.

  • Redundant precision cooling with environmentally friendly refrigerants
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS), with a backup generator on request
  • Early fire detection and suppression system
  • Access control and remote monitoring via Smart Control
  • Network connection via fiber, 5G or LTE
  • Optional: server racks, cabling, PDUs and complete IT hardware

Typical deployment scenarios

  • Replacement capacity after a fire, water damage or cooling failure in the server room
  • Bridging a refurbishment, a relocation or an IT modernization
  • Edge sites in manufacturing, logistics and energy supply
  • Temporary infrastructure on large construction sites and industrial projects
  • Additional capacity until a grid upgrade or a new building is completed

What really matters when sizing the system

The most common planning error concerns capacity. Many enquiries quote the sum of the power supply ratings instead of the actual IT load – in practice, real consumption is often 40 to 60 percent of that figure. Rounding up generously here means paying for cooling and UPS capacity that will never be used.

The second point is redundancy. Moving from a single-path design to N+1 for cooling and power costs noticeably more. The useful question is therefore not “how much redundancy is possible” but “what does an hour of downtime cost us”. N is enough for a test environment; for a production ERP system in manufacturing it rarely is.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly is a SmartMod available?

As a standard system, the SmartMod is available now. Given a suitable site and an existing power connection, delivery including positioning, connection and commissioning is possible in under 48 hours. In practice the schedule is set less by the module than by the site preparation.

Which power classes does the SmartMod cover?

The range runs from around 3 kW for compact edge installations up to 1 MW in the full build stage. The more powerful SmartMod Max variant scales the IT infrastructure to around 210 kW with integrated cooling, UPS and security systems.

What has to be in place at my site?

Essentially three things: a load-bearing, sufficiently level footprint with access for truck and crane, a power connection of adequate capacity, and a network connection. If the power connection is missing, operation can be bridged with a backup generator.

Can a SmartMod be operated permanently?

Yes. The system is designed for continuous operation and is widely used as permanent infrastructure. “Mobile” describes the construction and the option of changing location – it is not a time limit.

Can it be expanded later on?

Yes, modularly in build stages. Instead of rebuilding an existing system, a further module is added. If the SmartMod power range is no longer sufficient in the longer term, moving to the MaxiMod or MegaMod is the next step.
